E. Corneliu Giurgea discovered the phenomenon of Raman spectroscopy in the early 1950s when he was a student at the University of Bucharest, Romania. His research quickly led to the realization that the Raman effect is a much broader phenomenon than had been previously believed, that it can be used to detect molecules in biological samples and to estimate their concentration in solution. In 1958 he became a full member of the Romanian Academy of Sciences, and in 1962 he immigrated to Canada, where he continued his research at the University of Western Ontario
In 1967 he received his doctorate from Western Ontario, and in 1969 he earned his PhD in chemistry from McGill University. In 1974 he joined the faculty at Northwestern University, Chicago. In 1977 he moved to the Institute for Bio-Medical Engineering at Northwestern University, where he is currently employed as a professor of bioengineering and applied physics.
In 1979 Giurgea's work on Raman spectroscopy was featured on the cover of Discover Magazine and brought him international recognition as one of the leading scientists in his field.
